Local Guide

From magnificent riverside properties, beautiful heritage properties and a new wave of contemporary houses, townhouses, units and apartments, there’s something for everyone looking for a house for sale in the peaceful suburb of Ivanhoe that extends from the Yarra River and Darebin Creek parklands to its lofty northern and eastern borders. Relax with a coffee between browsing the boutiques on Upper Heidelberg Road, enjoy a round of golf down by the river or cycle along its trail, explore the suburb’s many tranquil parklands or take a short train ride into town; there’s so much to discover in idyllic Ivanhoe for lifestyle-loving residents happy to be on the go.

History

The village of Ivanhoe was established by 1850 and from 1853 the name Ivanhoe – a nod to Sir William Scott’s novel of the same name – was in use. An agricultural and dairy farming heritage gradually gave way to market gardens as well as community facilities including churches and hotels. Residential development took off after 1910 and in the 1930s the first AV Jennings housing development was located in Ivanhoe. Schools including Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar and Ivanhoe Grammar opened in 1903 and 1915 respectively.  Influential Australians have made their mark on this sought-after suburb. Academy Award-winning Australian actress Cate Blanchett grew up in Ivanhoe and TV personality and radio presenter, Wilbur Wilde calls the area home. Another Ivanhoe inspiration is Australian Paralympic swimmer, Sam Bramham.
